The Link Between Type 1 Diabetes And Celiac Disease
Today I wanted to share an interesting collection of articles that research the link between type 1 diabetes and celiac disease. Our first featured blogger, Wendy Rose from CandyHearts, has a daughter who suffers from both conditions – and research studies show that up to 10% of children develop both autoimmune diseases.
The articles can be found at the Celiac.com information website: http://www.celiac.com/categories/Celiac-Disease-Research%3A-Associated-Diseases-and-Disorders/Diabetes-and-Celiac-Disease/
Celiac disease has to do with gluten intolerance, and prevents the intestine from absorbing important nutrients. According to the findings, most scientists agree that there is a definite link between the two conditions, however more research needs to be done to determine the exact details of this connection.
The first article showcases a study where out of 94 selected type 1 patients, 13 had anti-endomysial antibodies – a signs of celiac disease. Interestingly enough, the study also suggested that celiac disease plays a protective role for patients who also have type 1, as those with both conditions showed no signs of retinal damage.
